Despite their general hardbody stance and mean-mugging about town, most rappers have solid gold hearts. Now that the Thanksgiving traffic and Black Friday melees have passed, The FlipSide is giving some respect where respect is due by sharing six hip-hop artists that decided their luck and success demanded they share their good fortune with the community around them.
Oakland — Mistah F.A.B.
Mistah F.A.B. may be most famous for his hella dope remix of the Ghostbusters theme, ‘Ghost Ride It,’ but the flashy dresser (perhaps a bit remorseful for promoting such unsafe driving habits) decided to give back with Turkey and warm clothes. All jokes aside, these are some of the finest lyrics produced over the course of the past decade: “Get out the way, let Casper Drive.”
L.A. — Game
The Game’s ruthless reputation and image were put on hold for the day as he joined his childhood church to share meals on Thanksgiving, even being so thoughtful as to cook up food in advance for the homeless in downtown L.A.
New York City — Nicki Minaj
Ms. Minaj, though clearly sparing no expense on her outfit, still has time and money to go back to her roots and share with youth in need. Her turkey giveaway event took place at P.S. 45, her alma mater.
Young Jeezy
Jeezy has some dough to spread around, too. Every city in the world suffers poverty, but at least most major American cities have raised up a famous rapper to remember where s/he came from. Jeezy tag-teamed the holiday spirit with Boys & Girls Club.
New Orleans — Young Money/Cash Money
Birdman and YMCMB are spreading the love on a corporate scale. They needed a warehouse just to have space for all the food they gave away to the very deserving people of New Orleans. This was the 17th consecutive year of their charitable event.
Over the years, 50 Cent has been a serious contributor to the neighborhoods where he grew up, helping to build community gardens and good-ol’-fashioned feeding the hungry. Even with a chef’s jacket on, in a charitable and soft-hearted situation, he still looks so damn intense.
