In major hip-hop news, superstar Beyoncé recently landed an endorsement/development deal with PepsiCo estimated at $50 million. The deal is reportedly a highly varied and intense collaboration between the artist and the soft drink company, involving brand sponsorship of her tour, a Beyoncé Pepsi can (pictured), and the development of original musical content with Pepsi funding. There is also a planned Beyoncé-Pepsi commercial, scheduled to air sometime after her performance at the halftime show of the upcoming Super Bowl. Furthermore, it’s been reported that Pepsi will pick up the tab for a promotions blitz in advance of her 2013 album release.
As the New York Times reports, part of the hype surrounding the deal is PepsiCo’s willingness to leave Beyoncé a multimillion dollar content development fund with which to pursue creative endeavors. As record companies scale back their development budgets for artists, PepsiCo and other non-music industry players are beginning to see these funding holes as opportunities that can be used to their advantage. Here’s to hoping Beyoncé’s $50,000,000.00 deal works out to to the fans’ advantage, as well.
