Countless MCs rap about using, abusing, and selling drugs, although the hip-hop storytelling is often entirely fictional, leading others in the community to question their performers’ authenticity. Gunplay spits no such fictions. He has, indeed, lived the life he raps, and he suffers the consequences today. Unlike labelmate Rick Ross, who is often called out for his past as a C.O. and for the appropriation of his all-too-real criminal mastermind moniker, Gunplay has been selling and using drugs since his youth, which shows, considering he looks a good bit older than his 33 years would indicate. He claims no problems with his recreational drug use, however: “I use drugs, drugs don’t use me.” Let’s just say his behavior in recent years (as well as his attitude towards cocaine relapse) tells a very different story.
In the past year Gunplay has been involved with a variety of incidents, including a now-notorious fight at the BET Awards where he was allegedly jumped by 50 Cent and his entourage after inflammatory remarks were exchanged. Though that beef was dropped fairly quickly, footage continues to surfaces of the G-Unit kingpin bowling with Gunplay’s MMG chain. The jewelry also made an appearance in 50’s latest video, ‘Major Distribution.’
On top of the BET Awards brawl, Gunplay’s erratic behavior came to a head in October of 2012 when he allegedly robbed his own accountant at his accounting offices. The Maybach Music rapper was – apparently – caught on video pulling a gun on the man and relieving him of a gold chain and cash. This erratic and reckless behavior, combined with the rapper’s troubled past, leads us to think that Gunplay has a ways to go in his fight with drug abuse.
