Straight out of North Philly, Meek Mill’s been tearing the game up for the past several years, despite setbacks along the way (most notably a period of incarceration following weapons charges, preventing him from capitalizing on a deal with T.I.’s Atlanta-based label, Grand Hustle). In 2009, following his prison stint, Meek struck a deal with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, thrusting him back into the spotlight.
Growing up in North Philadelphia, Meek Mill had overcome a number of challenges before his prison term. His father – described by members of his family as a “black sheep” – was in and out of trouble with the law before he was killed in an alleged robbery gone wrong. According to other family members, Meek’s father had shown a talent for rapping that they believe was passed on to his son, despite his passing when Meek was only five.
Of late, Meek has been making the blogroll over his beef with fellow Philadelphia MC Cassidy, though he’s recently expressed a desire to put the feud on the back burner.
